Lynn Presidential Scholarship recipient returns the favor

At Lynn University we are proud of each and every one of our graduate’s accomplishments. Mimi Trinh is no exception, and it is her altruism that makes this story particularly important to our community.

Mimi was born in Vietnam and was “adopted” by her parents in Wisconsin when she was 16. She was a fervent student and became involved in a diverse range of activities at school. Politics sparked her interest and she joined the debate team in high school. Upon starting her search for colleges and universities in the States, Mimi said she scoured the College Board’s list of schools with international populations. It comes as no surprise that Lynn University piqued her interest with an international student body of approximately 25%. Mimi Trinh came to Lynn University in 2011 after being awarded the Presidential Scholarship that covers both tuition as well as room and board. This scholarship is only given to one incoming freshman student per academic year, and speaks volumes to Mimi’s accolades before entering Lynn.

Mimi immersed herself in the culture and environment at Lynn University. She lived on campus for her four years as an undergraduate student and became involved in the iPulse student run publication, worked in the box office at the Wold Performing Arts Center, was invited to become a member of the exclusive Knights of the Roundtable, and simultaneously founded the Lynn Debate Team. Lynn University hosted the final Presidential Debate in 2012, which gave Mimi an opportunity to volunteer and see the political environment first hand.

It is difficult for Mimi to single out just one of her favorite experiences at Lynn University, but after pressing her, she said the Gingerbread concert with the box office team might be one of her best memories. Conversations with faculty members helped mold her education and career – she attributes a lot of her success to many members of the staff and faculty at Lynn University who encouraged her to pursue her goals. She said that she has three main goals in life: one for her mom, one for herself, and one for God. She doesn’t take anything for granted and strongly believes that what was given to you, you should give back. And give back is just what Mimi has done.

Recognizing that her adventure at Lynn University would not have been possible without a scholarship, Mimi has donated funds to allow another student to have the same opportunity. Over 80% of students attending Lynn University receive a scholarship or financial aid, which is a statistic that sometimes goes unnoticed. Mimi’s gift to the university will be awarded to two international incoming freshmen students who have an academic GPA of 3.5 or higher.

One of her dreams is to pursue a Master’s degree in Marketing at an Ivy League university. She is currently working for a real estate company that she had met via an internship organized by the Hannifan Center for Career Connections at Lynn. Mimi still lives in Boca Raton where she plays piano in her spare time. She continues to be thankful on a daily basis and hopes to one day start a scholarship foundation for Vietnamese students to pursue their education, a goal in which she believes also serves God. Mimi is an exemplary example of a Lynn University student and she hopes to inspire others to give back as well.
